Reassigning, Unlinking & Creating Master Products
Overview
The Link Products page supports two direct actions on a linked listing, plus a two-step way to break a listing out into its own Master Product:
- Reassign: move a Platform Listing from one Master Product (or Master Variant) to a different one.
- Unlink: detach a Platform Listing from its Master Product entirely. It moves to the Listings That Need Attention tab.
- Create a new Master Product: to split a listing out into its own brand-new Master Product (useful when two items were merged that shouldn't have been), first Unlink it, then create a new Master Product for it from the Listings That Need Attention tab.
When to use each action
Reassign
Use Reassign when a listing is linked to the wrong Master Product but the right Master Product already exists in your catalog.
Example: Your Shopify "Cotton Shirt - Large" got auto-linked to the Master Product "Cotton Shirt - Medium" because of a SKU typo. Reassign it to "Cotton Shirt - Large" instead.
How:
- Find the listing on the Master Product List tab.
- In the listing's row, under that platform's column, click the Reassign button.
- Search for and pick the correct Master Product from the picker, then map the variants to the correct Master Variants and confirm.
Unlink
Use Unlink when the listing doesn't belong to any of your current Master Products and you want to decide what to do with it later.
How:
- Find the listing on the Master Product List tab.
- In the listing's row, under that platform's column, click the Unlink button and confirm with Save & Apply. (You can tick "don't show this again" to skip the confirmation next time.)
- The listing moves to the Listings That Need Attention tab, where you can later assign it to the right Master Product or create a new one.
Create a new Master Product
Use this when an existing listing has been merged into a Master Product where it doesn't belong, and you want to split it out so it lives in its own Master Product.
Example: Two physically different products were both imported with the same SKU (a SKU mistake on the platform side), so they ended up as variants of one Master Product. After fixing the SKUs on the platform, break them apart by creating a new Master Product for the second one.
How:
- On the Master Product List tab, click Unlink on the listing you want to split out, then confirm. The listing moves to the Listings That Need Attention tab.
- Switch to the Listings That Need Attention tab and, in the listing's row, click Assign/Create New.
- In the picker, click Create New Master Product. The listing is placed into a freshly created Master Product of its own.
Tips & Notes
Troubleshooting
I reassigned a listing and now its price/inventory looks different.
That's expected behavior. After a reassignment, the listing is now tied to the destination Master Product. Future Status Manager and Price Manager updates will sync against the new group. If you want the original numbers back, reassign once more to the previous Master Product.
Reassign doesn't show the Master Product I want.
Use the "Search Master Products" box inside the Reassign picker to find it by name. If it still doesn't appear, the destination Master Product may not exist yet. The Reassign picker only lists existing Master Products - to create a new one, Unlink the listing first, then use Assign/Create New on the Listings That Need Attention tab and choose Create New Master Product.
I can't find the Reassign or Unlink buttons.
Make sure you're on the Master Product List tab. The Action column (with the Reassign and Unlink buttons) only appears once a listing is already linked. For unlinked listings, use the Listings That Need Attention tab, where each row has an Assign/Create New button instead.
